I really love Tumblr on the whole, but there are days when it makes me want to laugh hysterically and light myself on fire at exactly the same time. Turns out, today is one of those days. Right now there's this whole pocket of Tolkien purists who are determined to stop the movie fangirls from shipping things they don't like with condescending lectures on elf sexuality and incest taboos in Middle Earth, or whatever. Which, no thanks.

First of all, your in-depth knowledge of canon minutia doesn't really impress me, because I'm a pretty dedicated Tolkien nerd myself. I've read the books numerous times, including footnotes and appendices, as well as Unfinished Tales and all the 'notes' volumes Christopher Tolkien published. I've also got a Tolkien bestiary, a book of songs, about five Middle Earth encyclopedias, and a English to Khuzdul dictionary. I can read and write 'Hobbit' runes as easily as English. But I'm also aware that canon and fanon are two separate things, that book and movie 'verses don't always overlap just right, and that fandom is its own space where I'm allowed to ship what I want.

I've been on a The Hobbit kick recently, so. Let's go with that. I'll probably read just about anything, whether it's book 'verse or movie 'verse, but I particularly like:

- Bilbo/Thorin
- Bilbo/Bofur
- Thorin/Thranduil
- Fíli/Kíli
- Fíli/Kíli/Thorin¹

I've discovered I like Thorin/Thranduil best when it's a little angsty and dub-connish, but beyond that I have no real preference in the kink department, mainly because I'm at a point where I'm just happy enough to find smut. A lot of the The Hobbit fics at AO3 cap off in PG13 territory, which I get -- Tolkien's narrative has a certain non-sexual/courtly love feel to it -- but a girl cannot survive on cuddling fics alone.



¹My only regret is there aren't more Durins for me to ship together.

I need to write some fic and also find a job, so of course I've spent most of the morning staring at Tumblr and trying to make a text icon that says jon snow knows nothing/except where to put it. Sadly, my photoshop skills fail terribly.

Remix fic has hit a snag. I need the current conversation to take a particular direction, but I can't seem to do it in a way that a) isn't bafflingly long-winded, or b) doesn't read something like Holy change of subject, Batman! or Look, a velociraptor!

This post on Pete Wentz's blog pretty much sums up my life for the last week. I quit my job last Sunday¹, and since then I cannot be persuaded to leave the house with a cattleprod. What's that, we need groceries? Call Pink Dot. Son needs a ride home from the mall? Take the bus. Friends are going to the movies? I'll wait for the DVD.

Since I have you here, allow me to recommend some things I read/looked at this morning:

A Trinket, A Trifle by thistlerose. [Hunger Games; Effie Trinket, Mrs. Everdeen, gen]

This is very well done. It nicely explores one of my pet theories about Effie -- that over the years, she eventually began to realize that the Games were wrong on some level, maybe because losing her tributes every year started to wear her down, but she chose not to examine it too closely, because it was easier that way, because she was from the Capitol and so much of her daily life was tied up in the Games.

This also manages to make Mrs. Everdeen slightly sympathetic, something I'd never thought I'd say in a million years.

Denude by faithwood. [Harry Potter; Harry/Draco, adult]

Everything about this is delightful -- the atmosphere, the imagery, the different things and ideas that turn Harry on, the whole idea that their mutual obsession is a naked, obvious thing reaching an inevitable conclusion.

Also, smoking hot.

Speaking of the Hunger Games, where is all the Haymitch/Effie fic? Seriously. I'd read the hell out of that.

I was telling themostepotente on the phone last night that I'd also read the hell out of some Robert Baratheon/Ned Stark, set right after Robert wins the Iron Throne, and Robert is all loud and enthusiastic about it, and Ned really is kind of into it, but admitting that wouldn't be honorable, or whatever, so on the inside he's like oh fuck, yes Robert, harder, but on the outside he's all *sigh* whatever pleases you, My Grace.


¹ It's a ridiculous, super tl;dr story. Suffice to say I did everyone involved a favor, including myself.

I found it through Tumblr, of all places.

Speaking of Tumblr, I do have one -- xylodemon. I don't do much with it, mainly because I'm not entire sure what too do with it. Presently, it has a couple of old drabbles on it and a few pictures of Gerard Way's beautiful face.

I think I'm going to finish these avocado/lettuce wraps I just made and maybe watch a movie.
