Not actually dead!

I didn't mean to disappear, I swear it. Finals week was rough on me, because I hadn't been to school in so long I'd forgotten what is was like, and then my mother had a couple of medical things that needed doing, so we decided to take care of that while I'm on summer break.

Here, have some art recs:

Insatiable by [livejournal.com profile] rewrites24 [Harry Potter; Remus/Sirius, Regulus/Remus/Sirius, adult]

Look, Regulus/Remus/Sirius is the crack OT3 of my soul. And no one ever writes it, which saddens me deeply, let me tell you. This is wonderful, and bonus points for it being Remus' idea. Well, the threesome is Sirius' idea. Regulus is Remus' idea.

These are hot and angsty and sweet, and Bilbo is delightful.

This is also hot and angsty and sweet, and it jabs my possessive/jealousy kink in all the right places.

The Lion and His Hound by [personal profile] queenklu [The Hobbit; Fíli/Kíli, Fíli/Kíli/Thorin, adult]

Things I never knew I wanted until I was in the middle of reading it: Kíli is basically a life-ruiner, and has no idea.

I bring recs, in the usual array of fandoms.

Where The Heart Has Been by [livejournal.com profile] youremyqueen [Game of Thrones; Jon/Stannis, adult]

Many ASOIAF fans -- myself included -- think Jon will survive the mutiny at the Wall, simply because the plot isn't finished with him yet. This fic basically presumes the opposite; Jon does survive, but the plot doesn't really care. He doesn't get the Wall back, or fly into the sun and become Azor Ahai, or bump into Dany and her dragons. He's just living, only he doesn't really know how to do that without some sort of duty driving him. Stannis is absolutely glorious in this; he has no time for Jon's shit, because his life has been a huge ball of suck since before Jon was born.

Tea and Anarchy by [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic and [personal profile] eldanis [Good Omens; Aziraphale/Crowley, adult]

In which Aziraphale and Crowley retire to Jasmine Cottage and open a tea-house, and everything about it is perfect. The tea descriptions alone are worth the price of admission, never mind that every single word of this is fantastic.

Icebound by [personal profile] pherede [The Hobbit; Fíli/Kíli, adult]

So, one day I was browsing the Fíli/Kíli tag at AO3 thinking 'I hope there's hypothermia fic where the warming process results in frottage that's half desperate and half guilty,' and THEN THIS HAPPENED. It's everything I've ever wanted -- belivable hypothermia, smoking hot porn, beautiful language, and tons of emotion packed into a small space, and the underlying idea that Fíli followed Kíli into that crevasse in the first place because he intended to die with him, as it should be.

Here, have some recs of the ASOIAF persuasion:

a tithe to the seven in perfect thirds by [personal profile] themostepotente [Cersei/Various, NC17]

I had the good fortune to beta this; I got to read it about a month before everyone else, and I've been pretty much sitting on my hands ever since, waiting to rec it. This is a wonderful look at Cersei's life before the books start -- her childhood at Casterly Rock, the beginnings of her relationship with Jaime, and all the ways in which Maggy the Frog's prophecies and the aborted betrothal to Rhaegar effected the course of her life. The prose here is absolutely stunning.

The Evening Star by [livejournal.com profile] lit_chick08. [Ashara/Various, R]

I've reached a point with ASOIAF where I am almost more interested in the Rebellion Era than I am in the present canon. This is exactly the kind of fic I have been waiting to read for ages; it is a fantastic look at a lot of the characters who are either dead/missing before the books start, or don't get a lot of play in the Five Kings Era. Ashara is wonderfully done, as are Arthur, Elia, Oberyn, Brandon, and Ned.

I was talking about Chandler the other night, so have some Marlowe-verse recs, too:

The Woman in the Picture by [personal profile] vehemently. [Philip, PG]

This is a case fic, and it is fantastic. Marlowe and the writing style are both spot on in terms of tone, and the case is perfect -- it is interesting, and it also isn't neatly solved, which I liked, because in the novels, the cases aren't always neatly solved.

Gimlet, No Bitters by [personal profile] martha. [Philip/Terry, Adult]

I wasn't particularly looking for Philip/Terry slash. Well, I'm not sorry I found it. Again, Marlowe and the writing style are spot on in terms of tone, and the whole scenario is set up perfectly.

That awkward moment when...

...you realize half your OTP is also your fandom bicycle.

you must be tired, jon snow )

Here, have a picture of Richard Madden and Kit Harington looking super hot. Anyone with a Tumblr has probably seen it about 400 times by now, but I am posting it again anyway. Perhaps because I have a soft spot for plaid shirts and emo cardigans.

congratulations on your faces, boys )

I finished the archer's bows have broken pretty late last night -- I think I linked it on Tumblr sometime after 2:00 am, and shortly after that, I realized I need someone to keep me away from the Theon Greyjoy tag. I was kind of looking for .gifs of Alfie Allen having sex, but mostly what I found was PAIN IN MY HEART.

This post has been pretty useless so far, so. Have some recs:

every chorus was your name by [personal profile] honey_wheeler [ASoIaF/GoT; Jon/Sansa, NC17]

Remember my earlier conversation about Jon putting his face between a girl's legs? YEAH, OKAY. GUILTY AS CHARGED. Everything about this is delightful.

A Helping Hand by [personal profile] listedheart [Sirens; Ashey/Stuart, NC17]

If you haven't watched Sirens yet, you really should. It's only six episodes, during which everything is glorious and also Richard Madden is super hot. This fic was written for a porn battle, so it's mostly smut, but the smut is delicious.

A Friend in Need by [personal profile] listedheart [Sirens; Ashley/Stuart, NC17]

I think I've read this fic about five times in the last two days. I love it like burning. It's about Ashely and Stuart trying to navigate a Friends-with-Benefits relationship, even though Stuart has tons of issues and Ashley's pretty casual about sex in general. The peek into Stuart's ridiculous brain is wonderful, and everything Ashley does is hot. Bonus points for a spot-on Maxine cameo.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

The Man in the Gaberdine Suit by [personal profile] mtgat [American Gods; Shadow, gen]

I know I recced this very recently, but I'm going to talk about it again, because it's flawless.

The hardest part of I've always had with writing American Gods is capturing that sense of displacement that follows through the entire book. Ibis and Jacquel have found a niche that seems to work for them, and Easter does all right for obvious reasons, but by and large, these people just do not belong. They don't fit in anywhere, so they live on the fringes and wander from place to place. I know Shadow falls into a routine when he gets to Lakeside, but even there he isn't really settled. It's like he knows his time in Lakeside is just luring him into a false sense of security.

Shadow spends a majority of this fic hobo'ing across America, and it's perfectly done. And the ending... wow. I don't even know. It hits me hard every single time. I'd never consider things working out that way, until I read this fic, and then I thought WELL YES. OF COURSE.

Curds and Whey by [personal profile] deskclutter [Anansi Boys; Fat Charlie, Daisy, Marcus, gen]

I'm not really big on domestic!fic as a rule, but I came across this the other day and decided to give it a whirl, because there is a dire shortage of Anansi Boys fic. I mean, dire. I know that means I should probably shut my piehole and write some, but that is totally not the point right now.

Anway. This fic. I love it. It picks up right where the books ends, and it doesn't miss a beat. The premise is delightful -- that Fat Charlie tries to explain something important to his son through stories and songs, instead of, you know, a regular explanation, because it means Fat Charlie has finally accepted who he is. At the same time, he's perfectly and adorable awkward, just as Fat Charlie should be.

Also, Daisy is gold.

A Soliloquy in Eight Words by [personal profile] snegurochka_lee [Harry Potter; James/Snape, adult, NSFW art]

I'm sure you're all familiar with Lee's usual fare, so I probably don't need to tell you this is fabulous. But I will. THIS IS FABULOUS. I remember being so excited when this was first posted, because it was Lee and James/Snape. There will never be enough James/Snape.

Based on The Prince's Tale chapter of DH, this is a glorious AU that supposes Snape was friends with James since childhood, not Lily. Event unfold from there, building into a wonderfully hopeless and poisonous relationship. Each memory is perfectly done, and the last section makes me cry every single time.

Goat Song by [personal profile] delphi [Harry Potter; Aberforth/Snape, adult]

Full disclosure: I nearly didn't read this when it was posted at [personal profile] merry_smutmas, because the pairing didn't really interest me. But it was recced heavily on my friends list, and I liked both Snape and Aberforth separately, so I decided to give it a whirl.

I'm so very glad I did. It's wonderfully done. Aberforth's personality is awesome and very distinct, and his observations on Snape are just spot on.

Sentimental Reasons by [personal profile] frostfire [Casablanca; Rick/Sam, adult]

Look. Casablanca is my favorite move of all time.

Okay, that's not entirely true. It's tied with The Big Sleep for my favorite movie of all time, but that's not the point. The point is, I really, really like Casablanca a lot. I seriously watch it like three times a week. If Humphrey Bogart was alive right now and making movies I'd probably flail and picspam and fangirl about him the same way I do about Gerard Way.

All that said, I didn't realize I wanted Casablanca fanfic until I read it. I didn't realize I wanted Rick/Sam slash, either. I mean, the thought never occurred to me, maybe because I ship Rick/Ilsa so hard.

This is beautiful. It's Sam's POV, which is just bloody fantastic, and it starts well before the movie canon, and it sketches out Rick's shady past in a completely believeable way, and it spans until after the movie, with bonus points for Louis Renault making an awkward and terribly nosy third wheel.

In other news, today is looking like it might be awesome. [personal profile] fandom_stocking went live last night, and I also have a bonus round fic waiting for me over at [personal profile] rs_small_gifts, courtesy of [personal profile] midnitemarauder!

ETA: With a Little Help From My Friends. It's James/Remus/Sirius and it's by Lisa and it's amazing. I just left her a comment full of keymash and capslocks, because I can't actually form words.

Here, have a few tinyfandom recs from [personal profile] yuletide:

The Vintner's Luck

Dawn, 1845. Sobran Jodeau/Xas, PG

This is lovely and quiet. For some reason, I always forget how much I love this book until something reminds me, and this fit the bill perfectly, the way it slots right into the canon.

Phillip Marlowe (Chandlerverse)

It's a Raymond Chandler Evening. Phillip Marlowe, PG

I wasn't looking for Marlowe fic when I went nosing around the Yuletide archive, mainly because it never occured to me that someone would write some. I've always kind of wanted to write some myself -- I love old-school, hardboiled detective fiction, and Chandler is probably my absolute favorite -- but it's one of those things that's never going to happen. Happily, someone else went and did it for me.

I really, really liked this. Marlowe's voice is just about perfect, and the story is spot on -- Marlowe's having a lousy day, and then an irritating client shows up, and then things somehow manage to get worse, because things getting worse is pretty much the formula for Marlowe's life.

The Maltese Falcon

the means at hand. Sam Spade, Wilmer Cook, PG

I wasn't really expecting this, either. First Marlowe, then Sam Spade. BEST READING DAY EVER.

This supposes that Spade follows the Falcon to Istanbul at the end of the book, and it's really well done. Wilmer's voice is fabulous, and the background Sam/Brigid is perfectly done.

Brown-Eyed Girl. Sam Spade/Effie Perine, PG]

The first time I read the Maltese Falcon, I kind of secretly wanted Sam and Effie to ride off in the sunset together, only I knew they wouldn't, because nothing in their lives would ever be that easy. It isn't that easy here, either, and I love it.

Game of Thrones

At Last, Brother. Jon Snow/Robb Stark, Jon Snow/Samwell Tarly, NC17.

Look. This is the Job/Robb slash I've been wanting for the last ten years. Believe me when I tell you, it was totally worth the wait. Jon's voice is perfect, and the smut is smoking hot, and also bonus points for a delightfully spot-on Samwell Tarly.

American Gods

The Man in the Gaberdine Suit.

This is utterly perfect. That is, quite honestly, the only thing I can say about it. The author did a wonderful job capturing Gaiman's style, and Shadow is awesome in ways that cannot be textually rendered, and the whole premise of the story is brilliant. That's all I have, really. Fucking brilliant.

There are seventeen Game of Thrones fics at the [personal profile] yuletide archive. SEVENTEEN. I didn't have time to get started on it all today, because I want to take a nap before the Lakers game starts, but. SEVENTEEN. And it looks like an absolute treasure trove -- Sandor/Sansa, Loras/Renly, Jaime/Cersei, Catelyn gen -- I cannot wait.
