Quick Recs:

A Heavy Heart to Carry by [livejournal.com profile] luna_plath [ASOIAF; Jon/Theon, adult]

This is an AU where Jon doesn't go to the Wall and Theon doesn't go back to Pyke and every bit of it is flawless.

With a Direwolf as His Shadow by [livejournal.com profile] emynithilien [Sam/Gilly, Jon/Stannis, teen]

This is my [personal profile] got_exchange gift, and I absolutely love it. It's everything I wanted in a future/post-ADWD Sam fic, with bonus points for Jon and Stannis navigating a perfect dynamic somewhere between 'respected collegues' and 'secret boyfriends.' You have to join the community to read it, but its totally worth it.

[personal profile] kalakirya has podficced my Harry Potter/Good Omens crossover, Once More with Feeling.

Also, if you haven't checked out Your Cheatin' Heart - a love affair ficathon, do it now! There are still tons of prompts, in several different fandoms.

Insatiable by [livejournal.com profile] rewrites24 [Harry Potter; Remus/Sirius, Regulus/Remus/Sirius, adult]

Look, Regulus/Remus/Sirius is the crack OT3 of my soul. And no one ever writes it, which saddens me deeply, let me tell you. This is wonderful, and bonus points for it being Remus' idea. Well, the threesome is Sirius' idea. Regulus is Remus' idea.

For Those Who Cannot Sleep and And No Rest Shall Ye Find by [personal profile] keelywolfe [The Hobbit; Bilbo/Thorin, adult]

These are hot and angsty and sweet, and Bilbo is delightful.

Mine Over Kingdom and Treasure by [personal profile] victoriousscarf [The Hobbit; Fíli/Kíli, adult]

This is also hot and angsty and sweet, and it jabs my possessive/jealousy kink in all the right places.

The Lion and His Hound by [personal profile] queenklu [The Hobbit; Fíli/Kíli, Fíli/Kíli/Thorin, adult]

Things I never knew I wanted until I was in the middle of reading it: Kíli is basically a life-ruiner, and has no idea.

Tumblr is great, but my fandom heart is in LJ.

I only have two posts left for [community profile] snowflake_challenge, but today is 'Write a Love Letter to Fandom' day, and Tumblr and I are still on the outs, so. I'm going to browse the 1 Word prompts instead.

Snowflake Challenge, Day 10

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. It can be a detailed, thoughtful analysis, or a squeeful, joyful post.

I've gathered you here today to talk about [personal profile] snegurochka_lee.

Not only is Lee a fantastic person in general, she's a fantastic author. Seriously, her entire body of work is solid gold. Enough that she's developed a pied-piper effect on me over the years -- I'll cheerfully follow her into pairings and kinks I'm not particularly into, because I trust her writing.

A few absolute favorites:

Black Chords (the Firework of Madness Remix) [Sirius/Snape, James/Sirius, James/Lily, Snape/Lily, adult]

This one here is sheer genius. The original ficlet is very good but also very short; Lee fleshed it out into a much longer story about anger and jealousy and desperation, and two enemies who get pushed together by emptiness and all the things they can't have.

Napoleon in Three Acts [James/Sirius, Regulus/Sirius]

I love this one for many reasons. The Regulus/Sirius dynamic is pretty much perfect. It also nails a lot of my personal James/Sirius headcanons -- that Sirius was basically James' Dude exception, that in James' mind, that any physicality was just an extension of their close friendship in a 'it's not gay if it's just us' kind of way, which was quietly poisonous, and not really fair to Sirius, because it left no space for Sirius' feelings.

A Soliloquy in Eight Words [James/Snape, adult]

This is a retelling of 'The Prince's Tale' chapter of HBP, where it's James instead of Lily. He befriends James as a child, falls in love with James as a teenager, loses James as the war pulls them in different directions, and begins spying for Dumbledore in a bid to protect James from Voldemort. It's heartbreaking and perfectly done.

20 Random Facts About Remus Lupin [Remus, adult]

This one is free of flaws. If you don't start sobbing at the end of it you have no soul.

An Inconvenient Wedding [Draco/Hermione, adult]

Here we have an example of Lee leading me into pairings I don't normally read. Draco/Hermione doesn't normally do it for me. Infidelity fic does, however, and since Lee wrote it, I gave it a shot. Totally worth it.

On top of all this, Lee also actively recs both fic and art. If you are ever looking for something to read, check out her tag page. All her Sunday Recs posts are tagged by art, fic, pairing, author/artist, and theme, so there's a good chance you'll find exactly what you wanted. Absolutely brilliant fandom resource.
xylodemon: (Default)
I bring recs, in the usual array of fandoms.

Where The Heart Has Been by [livejournal.com profile] youremyqueen [Game of Thrones; Jon/Stannis, adult]

Many ASOIAF fans -- myself included -- think Jon will survive the mutiny at the Wall, simply because the plot isn't finished with him yet. This fic basically presumes the opposite; Jon does survive, but the plot doesn't really care. He doesn't get the Wall back, or fly into the sun and become Azor Ahai, or bump into Dany and her dragons. He's just living, only he doesn't really know how to do that without some sort of duty driving him. Stannis is absolutely glorious in this; he has no time for Jon's shit, because his life has been a huge ball of suck since before Jon was born.

Tea and Anarchy by [livejournal.com profile] irisbleufic and [personal profile] eldanis [Good Omens; Aziraphale/Crowley, adult]

In which Aziraphale and Crowley retire to Jasmine Cottage and open a tea-house, and everything about it is perfect. The tea descriptions alone are worth the price of admission, never mind that every single word of this is fantastic.

Icebound by [personal profile] pherede [The Hobbit; Fíli/Kíli, adult]

So, one day I was browsing the Fíli/Kíli tag at AO3 thinking 'I hope there's hypothermia fic where the warming process results in frottage that's half desperate and half guilty,' and THEN THIS HAPPENED. It's everything I've ever wanted -- belivable hypothermia, smoking hot porn, beautiful language, and tons of emotion packed into a small space, and the underlying idea that Fíli followed Kíli into that crevasse in the first place because he intended to die with him, as it should be.

So, [personal profile] rs_small_gifts went live today, and my totally awesome gift was one of the first things posted.

Look, I am a selfish, grabby person, and I love transformative works. Earlier this year, [livejournal.com profile] adistantsun did a podfic reading of 41 Random Facts About James Potter. It was absolutely brilliant, so when I saw she'd signed up for [personal profile] rs_small_gifts, I put podfic down as one of my three requests, secretly hoping she would pick me.

And she did! ♥♥♥♥♥

She went with Unexpected Visits in the Wintertime, the fic I wrote for [personal profile] rs_small_gifts last year. I have a huge sentimental attachment to this story, because writing it basically kept me in fandom -- I picked up a pinch-hit for [personal profile] rs_small_gifts last year on a whim, after a nearly two year hiatus, and I had a hard time with it at first, because I'd been out of service so long I'd almost forgotten how, but once I got it finished, it made me want to keep writing.

Enough waffle. Go listen to [livejournal.com profile] adistantsun's brilliant reading of Unexpected Visits. Streaming and DL links for .mp3 and .m4b are available here.

My [personal profile] hp_beholder gift was posted today, and I need to share it with the world, because it is glorious, glorious fanart.

Seduction by anon. [Snape/Moaning Myrtle, PG13]

I can't even tell you all how much I love this. Snape's face! Myrtle's hands! The gorgeous, gorgeous colors! You can just see Snape's hair through Myrtle's hands, and that is so perfect, as is the tilt of her glasses, and her hair, and... well, everything. Just everything.

So, roughly a hundred years ago, I wrote Time is What You Make It, a total PWP wherein a Time-Turner incident results in Harry having a threesome with Regulus and Sirius.

Well, my Remixer went and turned it into an actual story!

Time is What You Make It (the King of Pain Remix) by anon. [Regulus/Sirius, adultish]

This is fantastic in ways I can't even explain. It sketches out the Regulus/Sirius relationship, something that was handwaved already established in the original story, and their dynamic is exactly perfect -- they are completely screwed up, but they can't stay away from each other, and also understand each other in ways people outside the family can't.

I am about 99% sure I know who wrote this. The prose is very familiar, but I also think it's someone who knows me, because this fic was written in a way that pushes all of my buttons.

Remember yesterday, when I was complaining about the hole in my life where all the Ned/Catelyn first time/early marriage/curtain fic should be? It has been partially filled, courtesy of the Robert's Rebellion ficathon.

the lady in waiting by [livejournal.com profile] juno_chan. Ned/Catelyn, adultish.

the beginning by [livejournal.com profile] workswithwords. Ned/Catelyn, teen.

Both of these are brilliant and adorable and full of wonderful moments where Ned and Catelyn are unsure of each other. The first one is about Ned leaving Catelyn to go south and fight Robert's war, and the second is about Ned meeting Robb for the first time, while Jon is a huge elephant in the room.

On the Harry Potter front, there is this:

Good evening morning, kids! I'm up so late it's almost early because [profile] frontbits is poaching my internet connection. She keeps telling me she's doing her online homework, but the muted laugh-track in the background suggests she's watching Hot in Cleveland.

Thusly, I come bearing recs.

Hunger Games:

Battle Scars, by [personal profile] ladyofspring [Haymitch/Effie, teen]

[personal profile] featherxquill linked me to this after I was complaining about the general lack of Haymitch/Effie fic, and it was... everything I was looking for, really. It isn't overly angsty, because I don't think Effie would allow it, but it isn't romantic by any stretch, because Haymitch wouldn't even know where to begin.

A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones:

I'll know my name as it's called again by [personal profile] janie_tangerine [Jon/Ygritte, adult]

I love this pairing so much, and this is smoking hot.

my mouth is full of stars by [personal profile] honey_wheeler [Jon/Robb, adult]

This is also smoking hot, and it's also 20,000 words long, so it's smoking hot repeatedly.

Diamond glints on snow [personal profile] ren [Jon/Robb, teen]

This is a Five Things fic -- four places where Jon and Robb might have met again, and one where they did not. The first four are very well done and the last one nearly broke my heart.

Ygritte by [personal profile] riavel [Ygritte]

Jon + Ygritte by [personal profile] monizc [Jon/Ygritte]

You Know Nothing, Jon Snow by [personal profile] marinelli [Jon/Ygritte]

My ASoiaF shipping tendencies are really in display in this one -- Jaime/Cersei and Rhaegar/Lyanna are probably in my top five. As far as Jon goes, I ship Jon/Robb pretty hard, and I also like Jon/Sam2, but I love, love, love Jon/Ygritte. She was probably one of my favorite characters in ASoS, and by the time that book was over, I desperately wanted to read/write an AU where they went looking for Grendel's children instead of leaving that cave.

cut for more A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones waffle, complete with Jon Snow meaderings, totally batshit Targaryen theorizing, and also some potentially spoilerish stuff for A Dance with Dragons )

2 I really think I'm a Fandom of One with this pairing, but I don't care. My love for these two is pure.

This post on Pete Wentz's blog pretty much sums up my life for the last week. I quit my job last Sunday1, and since then I cannot be persuaded to leave the house with a cattleprod. What's that, we need groceries? Call Pink Dot. Son needs a ride home from the mall? Take the bus. Friends are going to the movies? I'll wait for the DVD.

Since I have you here, allow me to recommend some things I read/looked at this morning:

A Trinket, A Trifle by [personal profile] thistlerose. [Hunger Games; Effie Trinket, Mrs. Everdeen, gen]

This is very well done. It nicely explores one of my pet theories about Effie -- that over the years, she eventually began to realize that the Games were wrong on some level, maybe because losing her tributes every year started to wear her down, but she chose not to examine it too closely, because it was easier that way, because she was from the Capitol and so much of her daily life was tied up in the Games.

This also manages to make Mrs. Everdeen slightly sympathetic, something I'd never thought I'd say in a million years.

Denude by [personal profile] faithwood. [Harry Potter; Harry/Draco, adult]

Everything about this is delightful -- the atmosphere, the imagery, the different things and ideas that turn Harry on, the whole idea that their mutual obsession is a naked, obvious thing reaching an inevitable conclusion.

Also, smoking hot.

And now for some art -- all Harry Potter, and all distressingly work safe.

Concealed by [personal profile] achen089. [Sirius]

This House is Not a Home by [personal profile] viria13 [Sirius]

Lupin by [personal profile] ullakko. [Remus]

The Marauders by [personal profile] jackpot-84 [Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, Prongs]

Spinner's End by [personal profile] ullakko. [Snape, Bellatrix, Narcissa]

I also found this gorgeous piece of Harry/Draco art on the fuckyeah-harrypotterfanart Tumblr, but I can't figure out who drew it because of reblog drift. Alas. [ETA:] [personal profile] faithwood to the rescue! It's an older piece by [livejournal.com profile] reallycorking -- which, yeah. I should've know, based on how pretty it is.

So, my [personal profile] hp_beholder fic hates me like I murdered its mother in cold blood.

cut at the dotted line )

Speaking of the Hunger Games, where is all the Haymitch/Effie fic? Seriously. I'd read the hell out of that.

I was telling [personal profile] themostepotente on the phone last night that I'd also read the hell out of some Robert Baratheon/Ned Stark, set right after Robert wins the Iron Throne, and Robert is all loud and enthusiastic about it, and Ned really is kind of into it, but admitting that wouldn't be honorable, or whatever, so on the inside he's like oh fuck, yes Robert, harder, but on the outside he's all *sigh* whatever pleases you, My Grace.

1 It's a ridiculous, super tl;dr story. Suffice to say I did everyone involved a favor, including myself.
xylodemon: (Default)
When I woke up this afternoon morning, I intended to clean my house and tidy up my [personal profile] hp_beholder fic, so of course I've spent most of the day eating junk food in my pajamas and blinking at shiny things on the internet.

Thusly, I come bearing fic recs.

Harry Potter:

An Unexpected Gift by [personal profile] bethbethbeth [Snape/McGonagall, PG13]

This is absolutely delightful. The tone is almost playful, but also perfectly sharp around the edges, and Snape and McGonagall's dynamic is spot on.

The Hunger Games:

the war outside our door keeps raging on by [personal profile] novelized [Finnick/Gale, adult]

This is exquisite. When I finished it, I was incoherent for a good five minutes. All I could do was wave my hands around and think yes. this. forever repeatedly.

I also have some art recs, because I've spent more time on Tumblr today that I'd like to admit. I'm still not sold on it as a functional, interactive fandom platform, but I've decided it isn't completely useless, in a it is what it is kind of way.

Harry Potter:

Remus Lupin by [personal profile] sikuriina [Remus]

Regulus Black by [personal profile] viria13 [Regulus]

This post was going to be a rant on the CBS!Sherlock Holmes drama, and how a good portion of the show's potential fandom is now hysterical because CBS has cast Lucy Liu as Watson -- because she's Asian, or female, or a combination of both, I don't even fucking know -- and how I sometimes think fandom doesn't actually want the strong female characters its always banging on about, because when they finally get one, she's either dismissed wholesale for reasons people never really articulate, or she's systematically destroyed piece by piece for fandom's amusement.

Then I read this blog post by Patrick Stump, wherein he explains his recent radio silence -- apparently he's sad and disillusioned because tons of Fall Out Boy 'fans' have been going out of their way to harass and demean him because he had the nerve to start a solo project and explore a new musical direction. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

Here, have a gorgeous piece of art to look at instead. It's the best I can do right now.

Shoulder to Shoulder by [personal profile] gold-seven [Remus, Sirius, gen]

This is a snapshot of Remus and Sirius in the Shrieking Shack at the end of PoA, and it's gorgeous.

I found it through Tumblr, of all places.

Speaking of Tumblr, I do have one -- [personal profile] xylodemon. I don't do much with it, mainly because I'm not entire sure what too do with it. Presently, it has a couple of old drabbles on it and a few pictures of Gerard Way's beautiful face.

I think I'm going to finish these avocado/lettuce wraps I just made and maybe watch a movie.

Day 12

Rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into your fandom

Harry Potter is, I think, a very hard fandom to pin down. It's been around for years and years and years, and it's incredibly, just incredibly large. I don't think you can narrow it's entire point and purpose into a handful of fics. You can't just say "hey, read these three or fics right here, they'll explain everything, tell you everything you need to know."

Instead, I'm going to take this opportunity to rec some of my favorite gen fics. All of these are older fics -- before DH, even before HBP -- but that doesn't really matter. A really, really good gen fic is timeless, because it takes you back to how you felt and thought before the new canon arrived.

the whole of the moon by [personal profile] minervacat [Harry, Remus, gen]

I'm pretty sure I've recced this before. Whatever, it's phenomenal. I so badly wanted for Harry and Remus to develop a strong friendship in HBP. I was disappointed when that didn't really happen, and I'm pretty sure this fic is the main reason why.

Wordless by [livejournal.com profile] penknife [Arthur, PG]

I'm pretty sure I've recced this one before, too. The very first time I read this, the first thing I did afterward was call my dad. I haven't read it since he died, because quite honestly, I can't.

A Cloak, Many Colours, and the Boy Who Didn't Live by [personal profile] snegurochka_lee [James, gen]

Oh, James. If DH hadn't come along and told me otherwise, I would have believe this is the way things happened. Every single word of it.

A Certain Night by [personal profile] mindabbles [Neville, Longbottoms, gen]

This is one of those fics that attacked me from behind. I mean, I never knew I wanted a gen fic about Neville and his family until I read this. After I read this, I didn't understand why I hadn't thought about wanting a gen fic about Neville and his family in the first place.

Aphelion by [personal profile] carmine_ink [Peter, Remus/Sirius, gen]

This is a Remus/Sirius fic in some ways, but it a lot of ways, it's really about Peter. And it's about a Peter you don't see very often in fic, if you see Peter at all. This Peter is clever, capable, patient, and shrewd -- as opposed to the bumbling idiot who is constantly sent to the kitchens so James, Remus, and Sirius can have some privacy to shag.

Fire on Babylon by [personal profile] musesfool [Draco/Various, adult]

I know I said this list was going to be about gen fic, and here I am linking to something with an adult rating. That's the thing with a really, really good fic -- it can't always be neatly pigeonholed into a particularly category. Yeah, this fic has sex in it. In fact, it has both het and slash. But really, this fic is about Draco. It is very perfectly about Draco.

A few weeks ago, I recced Sleeping in the Devil's Bed, a flawless and hot-as-hell Sirius/Narcissa fic from [personal profile] smutty_claus. I've been super anxious for reveals, because I really wanted to know who wrote it.

[personal profile] gryffindorj wrote it.

I haven't really had a chance to read any of her other stuff, what with being in and out of hiatus for the last two years. I went rummaging around in her masterlist this afternoon, and I found some absolute gems:

Wedding Bells Blue Balls Remix [James/Remus, NC17]

I really do love James/Remus, and this one is both clever and filthy-hot. Remus' mouth should be washed out with soap.

Curious [James/Regulus, Remus/Sirius, NC17]

Make way for shower sex, and a perfectly pushy Regulus, and did I mention the shower sex? It also has James creeping on Remus and Sirius while they make out -- which is one of my favorite things ever -- and Remus' mouth should be washed out with soap here, too.

Death on Two Legs Harry/Sirius, NC17

This is a brilliant EWE AU where Harry is an Auror and Sirius has been reincarnated as Death.

What it says on the tin, kids. I can't explain it any better than that without giving all the fabulous bits away.

Glitch [Sirius/Teddy, NC17]

I didn't know I wanted this pairing until I read it, and this -- this is perfectly angsty and wrong.

Day 6

Rec at least three fanworks you thought you wouldn't like but did.

Exorcism by [personal profile] cluegirl [Harry Potter; Harry/Ron, adult]

I wasn't into Harry/Ron for a long time, mainly because the little bit I'd read was overly fluffy, and extreme fluff doesn't agree with my digestion.

Anyway, this fic. I started reading it accidentally. No, really. It was a thousand years ago, so I don't know exactly how it happened -- either it was mistagged on a newsletter/recs post, or I just can't read. However it went down, I didn't realize it was Harry/Ron until I was already five or six paragraphs in, and by that point, I was already sold.

I'm so glad I kept reading it, because it's flawless.

Nightblooming Heartsease by [personal profile] julad [Harry Potter; Neville/Snape, adult]

So, yeah. Snape/Neville is one of those pairings that just doesn't do it for me. Most of the time, anyway. With that in mind, I had no intention of reading this, even though I'd heard really wonderful things about it.

I eventually caved, though, because it's a prequel to Transfigurations, and my love for that fic cannot be textually rendered. I'm really glad I did cave, because it's brilliant.

A God Amongst Men by [personal profile] floweringjudas [Harry Potter; James/Remus, adult]

I saw this recced in a few places when it was first posted, and I was pretty excited about it, because James/Remus is always in short supply. However, a couple people told me flat out that I wouldn't like it, given my usual fic preferences and my unholy love for James Potter. The Marauders are not a happy family here -- a premise I actually like from time to time, provided it's done well -- and the characterization of James is fairly brutal. In short, he's a complete ass.

Eventually, I just couldn't help myself. Like I said, I do occasionally like fics where the Marauders are not really BFFs. This is really, really well done. Particularly the way it includes Lily and Sirius, and the events of the first war.

Truck Driving with the Dead by [personal profile] kennahijja [Harry Potter; Ron, gen]

Second-person POV is usually a deal-breaker for me. I just can't handle it. I'm not sure what the problem is, exactly -- I just don't enjoy it. Maybe my brain doesn't work that way. If I do sit down and read a fic written in second-person, usually what happens is about three paragraphs in I start trying to transpose it into third-person in my head just so I can understand what's going on, and I end up with a headache.

Several people told me I should read it anyway. Turns out, they were totally right. It is beautifully done.

The Way We Live Now by [personal profile] kabeyk [Harry Potter; Draco/Remus/Snape, adult]

My initial issue here was the pairing.

I mean, the idea of Remus/Draco interests me strangely1, but I'm not all that big on Remus/Snape or Draco/Snape, and I didn't think the mixed bag approach would work out any better for me. However, I've always liked [personal profile] kabeyk's writing, and this fic has werewolf!Draco2. Believe me, werewolf!Draco was enough to tip the scales.

And I totally loved it. It's clever and hot and Snape is fantastic.

1 Don't lie. Now that I've mentioned it, it interests you strangely, too.
2 So does this.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

The Man in the Gaberdine Suit by [personal profile] mtgat [American Gods; Shadow, gen]

I know I recced this very recently, but I'm going to talk about it again, because it's flawless.

The hardest part of I've always had with writing American Gods is capturing that sense of displacement that follows through the entire book. Ibis and Jacquel have found a niche that seems to work for them, and Easter does all right for obvious reasons, but by and large, these people just do not belong. They don't fit in anywhere, so they live on the fringes and wander from place to place. I know Shadow falls into a routine when he gets to Lakeside, but even there he isn't really settled. It's like he knows his time in Lakeside is just luring him into a false sense of security.

Shadow spends a majority of this fic hobo'ing across America, and it's perfectly done. And the ending... wow. I don't even know. It hits me hard every single time. I'd never consider things working out that way, until I read this fic, and then I thought WELL YES. OF COURSE.

Curds and Whey by [personal profile] deskclutter [Anansi Boys; Fat Charlie, Daisy, Marcus, gen]

I'm not really big on domestic!fic as a rule, but I came across this the other day and decided to give it a whirl, because there is a dire shortage of Anansi Boys fic. I mean, dire. I know that means I should probably shut my piehole and write some, but that is totally not the point right now.

Anway. This fic. I love it. It picks up right where the books ends, and it doesn't miss a beat. The premise is delightful -- that Fat Charlie tries to explain something important to his son through stories and songs, instead of, you know, a regular explanation, because it means Fat Charlie has finally accepted who he is. At the same time, he's perfectly and adorable awkward, just as Fat Charlie should be.

Also, Daisy is gold.

A Soliloquy in Eight Words by [personal profile] snegurochka_lee [Harry Potter; James/Snape, adult, NSFW art]

I'm sure you're all familiar with Lee's usual fare, so I probably don't need to tell you this is fabulous. But I will. THIS IS FABULOUS. I remember being so excited when this was first posted, because it was Lee and James/Snape. There will never be enough James/Snape.

Based on The Prince's Tale chapter of DH, this is a glorious AU that supposes Snape was friends with James since childhood, not Lily. Event unfold from there, building into a wonderfully hopeless and poisonous relationship. Each memory is perfectly done, and the last section makes me cry every single time.

Goat Song by [personal profile] delphi [Harry Potter; Aberforth/Snape, adult]

Full disclosure: I nearly didn't read this when it was posted at [personal profile] merry_smutmas, because the pairing didn't really interest me. But it was recced heavily on my friends list, and I liked both Snape and Aberforth separately, so I decided to give it a whirl.

I'm so very glad I did. It's wonderfully done. Aberforth's personality is awesome and very distinct, and his observations on Snape are just spot on.

Sentimental Reasons by [personal profile] frostfire [Casablanca; Rick/Sam, adult]

Look. Casablanca is my favorite move of all time.

Okay, that's not entirely true. It's tied with The Big Sleep for my favorite movie of all time, but that's not the point. The point is, I really, really like Casablanca a lot. I seriously watch it like three times a week. If Humphrey Bogart was alive right now and making movies I'd probably flail and picspam and fangirl about him the same way I do about Gerard Way.

All that said, I didn't realize I wanted Casablanca fanfic until I read it. I didn't realize I wanted Rick/Sam slash, either. I mean, the thought never occurred to me, maybe because I ship Rick/Ilsa so hard.

This is beautiful. It's Sam's POV, which is just bloody fantastic, and it starts well before the movie canon, and it sketches out Rick's shady past in a completely believeable way, and it spans until after the movie, with bonus points for Louis Renault making an awkward and terribly nosy third wheel.

In other news, today is looking like it might be awesome. [personal profile] fandom_stocking went live last night, and I also have a bonus round fic waiting for me over at [personal profile] rs_small_gifts, courtesy of [personal profile] midnitemarauder!

ETA: With a Little Help From My Friends. It's James/Remus/Sirius and it's by Lisa and it's amazing. I just left her a comment full of keymash and capslocks, because I can't actually form words.

Here, have some reading material.

- Sleeping in the Devil’s Bed, by anon. Sirius/Narcissa, NC-17

My love for this fic cannot be textually rendered. The porn is smoking hot, but that's not even the point. It's a bonus. This has a very honest and clever Narcissa POV, and Sirius is just briliiant -- reckless, cavalier, brash, foul-mouthed, and overtly sexual even in mundane situations. This also gets extra credit for an awesome Remus cameo, and also mention of Sirius' flying motorbike, something I feel is sorely neglected.

- Good Will, by [personal profile] so_jayded. Remus/Sirius, PG-13

This is very cute. It's a Remus/Sirius story, but it's really about James, and how he figures out Remus and Sirius are together long before anyone tells him. I have a lot of crazy personal canon about the Marauders (you're all shocked, I know), but one thing I really, honestly believe about them is that a lot of things went without saying, because it didn't need to be said, because they knew each other so well and loved each other so much that they really could communicate and read each other with just gestures and smiles and quirked eyebrows.

Yes, even Peter.

Speaking of Peter, [personal profile] snegurochka_lee and [personal profile] fluffyllama are both trying to trick me into writing Peter Pettigrew fic. Sigh. I'm not necessarily apposed to the idea, I just don't have time right now. I have a couple things I want to write for [personal profile] fandom_stocking, and I'm considering writing some smut for the [personal profile] rs_small_gifts bonus round, and I also have an American Gods fic 1 simmering in the back of my brain, so.

And I'm probably not going to tackle any of that tonight. I had a terrible, terrible day at work, and my feet hurt, and I'm pretty sure that the only thing in my immediate future is a large glass of gin and a long nap.

1 This one is [personal profile] gehayi's fault, even though she probably doesn't realize it, and if I actually do end up writing it, I will totally blame her in the headers.
